On Sept. 11, 2006, thousands of
Arizonans of all ages, faiths and backgrounds will gather at Wesley Bolin
Plaza to dedicate the state’s memorial to the events of September 11, 2001.
The Governor’s Arizona 9/11
Memorial Commission is organizing the event to commemorate the structure
that the group envisioned, researched, funded and built (with no taxpayer
dollars).
The design, by CoLAB+Jones
Studio, Inc., Tempe, uses the sun to reflect words and thoughts articulated
by Arizonans who were directly affected by the events of Sept. 11. The
memorial, titled Moving Memories, also will display a fragment of World
Trade Center Tower 1 that will be fully illuminated each year at noon,
Sept.11.
The memorial, according to Gov.
Napolitano, “is unique, bold, dynamic, educational and unforgettable. The
thoughts and remarks etched in stone will serve as learning tools for all of
us, our children and our children’s children.”
Memorial Commission Chairman
Billy Shields noted that Sept. 11 was a day “when we were all Americans and
Arizonans, sharing in a tragic experience that changed our world
forever. The memorial at the Arizona State Capitol will serve as a symbolic
reminder for us and for generations to come.”
Starting the day on Monday, Sept.
11, 2006, will be a public sunrise ceremony with representatives of a
variety of faiths who will bless the memorial with words and a show of
solidarity.
